101 in 1001 {II}: 041 get a bikini wax [completed 11.15.11]
That Crawford Tillinghast should ever have studied science and philosophy was a mistake. These things should be left to the frigid and impersonal investigator, for they offer two equally tragic alternatives to the man of feeling and action; despair if he fail in his quest, and terrors unutterable and unimaginable if he succeed.

  7. i missed the brazilian craze. in my defense, i think it was more of a "white girl" craze.

(internets, all of those were esb, in case you couldn't tell)

i love you too much to give you a detailed account of the indignities i suffered last night. i will say that 1) though my high tolerance for pain has been reconfirmed, 2) you'd have to chloroform me to get me back on that table. also, though i contemplated asking for change in order to tip my gal prior to the treatment, i was dead certain afterward that 3) anyone willing to approach those places with wax deserves at least $20 over the top.

who the hell gets those things on a regular basis?! not a rhetorical question.

when was this craze? i think we all know why i missed it, but i refuse to believe it happened at all.

my first was in a foreign country, in a "room" that was really just a corner of a salon with a sheet strung up. i couldn't communicate with anything other than gestures and i was not only de-furred but also partially de-skinned.

i think it was nearly 7 years before i attempted it again. now, if i want one, i SHELL OUT. not an area in which to go cheap, i think.

oh, god: if i'd heard that, i'd never have made it to the salon at all! this one was actually at a very nice place, though i did (cough) have a groupon for ye waxin'. i can only imagine what goes down at a fly-by-night joint.

I am indeed a regular, and strangely in my experience there is no clear correlation between expense and quality in this arena. I've had some awkward/painful/unbeautiful pricey rips, and much better jobs done by immigrants charging less. The price point seems to pivot on the ambience, which I can live without. Currently I visit my people (the Vietnamese) at literally the closest salon to my house, where $25 + tip does the job every 5-6 weeks. In NYC I went to the Russians at Beauty & Youth Salon on 6th Ave in the Village. There was one I tended to avoid, but generally they were great.
